On The Roof brings together a diverse range of talents in music and dance. Our work focuses in an ever evolving exploration into the results of collaboration, focusing on the relationship between sound and movement. As a collaborative group, we are engaged in the ways these two art forms can influence and enrich each other. The exchange and interplay between disciplines creates a raw, energetic atmosphere maintained through the subtle development of the work.

The ensemble had its beginnings in 2011, when a group was formed to recreate Charles Mingus’ famous piece ‘The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady’. Musicians and dancers and choreographer Tony Thatcher worked together on the piece, transcribing, learning and creating. Since then the group has evolved and started creating its own original work.
